Simon Smith, director of Zakon, said he was grateful to have the opportunity to speak at such a professional and well organised event
Professor Jo Drugan and Simon both spoke at the webinar. Prof. Drugan covered topics such as research for the Transitional Organised Crime & Translation project, the legal background of human trafficking and modern slavery and the investigation process and the role of the interpreter. Using his 24 years’ experience as a police detective, Simon was able to share his knowledge of the key terminology, cover key pieces of legislation and some of the unique terminology that these investigations present. He then showed the audience a Visually Recorded Interview, setting them some tasks to show what it could be like interpreting within a human trafficking or modern slavery interview.
At the end of the webinar Simon answered some questions from people in the audience and was able to share resources, such as Zakons free Resource library, to help support interpreters.Zakon run full day workshops on Interpreting Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Investigations which can be found here.
